Cellular technology is poised for a quantum leap. Planned for 2020, the worldwide launch of 5G will pave the way for end-to-end digitization of the economy and society. It is widely anticipated that, with 5G, futuristic-sounding scenarios like autonomous driving and intelligent, digitally integrated production will be realities by 2025. Between then and now, however, there is quite a lot of work to be done, especially in regions with suboptimal infrastructure. Take Germany, for example: According to Germany’s Federal Statistical Office, in 2017 less than half of all companies with a workforce of 10 or more who accessed the Internet did so via a broadband connection capable of speeds of at least 30 Mbit/s. 27 percent of firms in this category were still having to make do with less than 10 Mbit/s. That puts Germany only in the middle of the field in the current EU rankings, the front runners being Denmark (where 73 percent of companies have high-speed Internet access) and the Netherlands (65 percent).
Germany’s mobile network carriers are currently going all-out to realize the 5G standard, which supports data transfer rates in the gigabit range. Vodafone is one of these. At CEBIT, it will have a showcase in Pavilions P32 and P33, where it will demonstrate how 5G can enable robots to learn from each other in real time. Showcase visitors will be able to collaborate with robots on a range of fascinating tasks and activities. Vodafone will also be using its CEBIT presence to demonstrate why 5G necessitates high-speed wired networks as well. The company’s CEO for Germany, Dr. Hannes Ametsreiter, is very happy with the new CEBIT format because it enables exhibitors to stage technology with even greater emotional impact and appeal. 5G technology may still be a few years away, but digital network solutions and cloud-based unified communication services are already on the market and can help companies become more flexible and efficient right now. LANCOM, for example, will be using CEBIT to present Management Cloud, the world’s first hyper-integrated network management solution that intelligently provisions, optimizes and administers even the most complex of network architectures, making manual configuration of individual devices a thing of the past (Hall 13).
This summer, AVM will be using CEBIT to unveil the much-anticipated 7.0 release of its FRITZ!OS operating system. The new release contains a number of new enhancements and features for mesh networking, Smart Home technology and telephony. AVM will also be showcasing its current lineup of FRITZ!Box DSL, cable, fiber and LTE fast-Internet hardware. The company will be exhibiting in Hall 13 and on the d!campus open-air site.

EASY SOFTWARE will be showcasing an EASY field service app for smartphones and tablets that can be used for after-sales service and service call-outs. The app integrates backend systems such as ERP, materials management, CRM and production, giving field service technicians and mechanics all the data they need to carry out their inspections and repairs (Hall 15).
CEBIT 2018 will show business decision-makers what’s already achievable with wired and cellular networks and what the future holds in the 5G age.
