Manual data capture isn’t just hugely time-consuming and therefore costly, it’s also very error-prone. Nonetheless, it long remained a better option than automated capture systems. However, cutting-edge intelligent OCR systems now offer a virtually error-free means of analyzing analog documents and transforming them quickly and reliably into digital data that can be put to a wide range of uses. To achieve optimum results, it’s absolutely essential to have image data of the highest possible standard. This is why Eschborn-based B&L OCR SYSTEME GmbH collaborates exclusively with big-name manufacturers at the top of their game. At CeBIT 2016 in Hannover, the company is unveiling a number of firsts, including the new B&L FormStar 7.0 universal OCR/ICR system.

FormStar 7.0 is a multi-platform client-server application for universal document processing and manual data capture. The modular software includes components for automatic template-based recognition (OCR/ICR/handwriting recognition) and free-form recognition for the automated processing of mail, faxes, e-mails and unstructured documents such as creditor invoices, orders, fax orders and order confirmations. Using a scanned sample document, the operator specifies the template type and reading fields directly on the screen before using menu functions to precisely define field content (handwriting, machine writing, numeric characters, alphanumeric characters, identification marks, barcodes, etc.) and specific check algorithms (regular expressions, check digit processes, database checks). Data from incomplete OCR/ICR results is then displayed in an ergonomic correction window for editing.
