After electric drive systems, autonomous driving is the biggest focus for the future of the automobile. Telematics (telecommunications + informatics) is what it’s all about - using various communication technologies, from GPS and digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) networks to Bluetooth, WiFi and mobile communications to integrate vehicle safety and entertainment services such as navigation, geo-localization and emergency alarms. To meet the demands of the rapidly growing autonomous vehicle industry, LG Electronics - global telematics market leader since 2013 - is dedicated to introducing next-generation solutions that offer high-precision mapping information. To help it achieve its aims even faster, the South Korean company is now collaborating with HERE Technologies (HERE), the world’s leading supplier of mapping data and location services for the automobile industry.
HERE already provides data to more than 100 million vehicles. What's more, the company is also working with the automobile industry to develop HD Live Map, a high-precision, cloud-based mapping service that will support connected advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and automated driving solutions. HD Live Map is not only capable of recognizing roads - it can also identify all surrounding features such as road markings, stop signs, pedestrian crossings, speed signs and traffic lights. "We're excited to present a new standard for autonomous mobile communication solutions in cooperation with HERE, which has unsurpassed cutting-edge automotive guidance technology," said Kim Jin-Yong, Executive Vice President of the Vehicle Components Smart Business Unit at LG. "With partners like HERE, LG can continue to advance the next generation of connected car technologies to help prepare automakers for the self-driving era."
