"Every industry can benefit"

Matthias Hartmann, Chairman of the Management Board at IBM Deutschland about the huge potential of the blockchain – and why it is not the silver bullet for every challenge.

What are the advantages of blockchain technology?

Using the blockchain, we can digitally portray, track and more efficiently exchange practically everything that has a value - all without a central control point. The more partners who take part, the more sense using it makes, the more transparent the value creation chains become, and the greater the risk of fraud or human error. The blockchain allows all partners to securely record transaction data and depending on access rights, share it with each other.

Are there risks too?

Despite the huge potential, the block chain is not the silver bullet for every challenge. In projects with our customers, we attach a great deal of importance to precisely understanding the problems and business processes involved, in order to decide together whether the blockchain really is the best way forward.

Which industries will benefit most from the blockchain?

Every industry can benefit. We are working on projects with customers from the financial sector, the luxury goods industry, the energy industry and the public sector. I can also see great potential in the area of supply chain management and logistics.

Matthias Hartmann, the former Chairman of the market research company GfK, has been responsible for IBM's business in Germany, Austria and Switzerland since January 2018.
