Hardware interfaces under lock and key

Not every data thief sneaks in through the data highway, sometimes they come on foot with a USB stick to pry open your systems. Smart Light Solutions (SLS) GmbH has chosen CEBIT 2018 to show off its new security concept - Smartkeeper - and help safeguard hardware interfaces against malicious attacks.

"Smartkeeper is a preventive security concept for protecting and controlling IT hardware interfaces to safeguard sensitive data and information," explains Nils Fleischhauer, managing director at Smart Light Solutions GmbH. Fleischhauer points out that IT security management is becoming ever more important due to the constantly growing complexity and risks - not to mention the increasingly stringent regulations (GDPR). A classic weak spot, says Fleischhauer, are USB ports, which hackers can use to quickly connect a USB stick or even a smartphone to copy data or install malicious software.

SLS is acutely aware of increasing cyber crime rates, and says it won't be long before this threat spreads beyond the net. That’s why the company believes innovative tech companies, public institutes, universities, cities and municipalities need to tackle the question of how to also physically protect sensitive data. The Smartkeeper from SLS on show at CeBIT 2018 is a physical IT security solution with a range of options to mechanically seal and lock IT hardware output and input ports such as USB ports and network connections in PCs, switches, printers and servers. "But Smartkeeper locks also enable operators to safeguard, lock, release and manage IT interfaces inside buildings or manufacturing plants," explains Fleischhauer, "Smartkeeper therefore provides an additional barrier to existing software security products. This significantly helps prevent industry espionage, data theft and the introduction of malware - from both within and outside the company - ensuring sensitive data and information are protected on all fronts."
