Digitalization: Challenges and opportunities

91 percent of industrial decision-makers in Germany, the USA, and Japan see the digitalization of industrial products as an opportunity.

23 Feb. 2016

"New data, integration, automation and digital customer interfaces are disrupting existing value chains. Businesses need to scrutinize their products and capabilities and improve their digital maturity in order to recognize, develop and quickly implement new possibilities." This is the bottom line in a much-quoted 2015 study from Roland Berger Strategy Consultants commissioned by the BDI (Federation of German Industry).

According to a survey by the consultancy McKinsey, 91 percent of industrial decision-makers in Germany, the USA, and Japan see the digitalization of industrial products as an opportunity. On average German companies expect digitalization to increase productivity by 20 percent.

As a market analysts for business software Trovarit AG has already observed the transformation of business practices. "Integrating the physical world of manufacturing with the digital world of planning enables autonomous regulation of manufacturing and greater transparency in all processes. Component parts and machines communicate with each other and can independently find the best way to go from production to end product," according to the consultants. The amount of data accumulated (Big Data) enables "increasingly reliable prognoses in terms of material requirements and delivery capacity and forms the foundation for the production system to improve itself." In the opinion of the consultancy commerce is also undergoing rapid changes. High-street businesses, online shops, glossy catalogs and smartphone apps are coming together thanks to multi-channel integration. Providers optimize inventory, storage locations, and delivery times based on the data they obtain here.

Trovarit AG believes that all this will entail new challenges for ERP support. As a company’s "nervous system" software for enterprise management needs "to do more than ensure consistent maintenance of master data and variable data," state the experts. "It also needs to enable coordination and communication within the company and along the supply chain from supplier to customer via business logic mapped by the system."

As cooperation partner at CeBIT in the display area ERP & HR , Trovarit AG will demonstrate how enterprise resource planning is transforming digitalization from March 14 to 18, 2016. The supporting program in Hall 5 will include presentations and discussions at the ERP Forum, live comparisons of ERP, and Guided Tours on the topics of ERP, ECM and CRM.
