A representative survey on behalf of the digital association Bitkom shows that although only 5 % of surveyed companies are currently using 3D printing, every fifth company is already discussing using it in the future. The numbers are considerably higher in the manufacturing industry: 16 % of companies in this sector are already using additive manufacturing and a further 40 % are planning to do so.

Digitalization also has an influence on the companies’ product line: More than 40 % of those surveyed were able to add new products and services to their product line as a result of digitalization, and almost two thirds have optimized their product line with additional digital services. Incidentally, the degree to which companies are able to drive digital change often correlates with the size of the company. As such, overall, only every fifth company has its own organizational unit that deals with digitalization, whereas in companies with 500 or more employees the percentage lies at 42 %.
