CEBIT spirit to get things buzzing in downtown Hannover

Hannover's downtown will soon be grooving to the CEBIT beat, thanks to a bright array of off-site events designed to highlight and celebrate the digital lifestyle. "Together with several partners, we are taking CEBIT's upbeat spirit and themes to the pedestrian streets of downtown Hannover. CEBIT and the City of Hannover are inextricably linked," remarked Oliver Frese, the Deutsche Messe Managing Board member in charge of CEBIT.

Hannover business association City-Gemeinschaft to stage a Digital Coffee Break at the heart of the city (Kröpke Square)

Digitization is profoundly changing the way people live, socialize and interact with the world. The major opportunities and challenges it brings will be explored at the Digital Coffee Break to be staged on Kröpcke Square, at the d!lounge hosted by Deutsche Messe and Hannover's newspaper Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung (HAZ). There, moderator Jan Sedelis and a panel of guests will address a variety of important questions, including: What new professions are sprouting up around digitization, and what existing professions are being transformed in the process? How can we keep our personal digital information secure for the long run? How can children and young adults safely interact on social networks?

Hannover's City-Gemeinschaft business association and Deutsche Messe will officially open the d!lounge on Sunday, 10 June. Starting on Monday, 11 June, the daily Digital Coffee Break – a moderated panel discussion – will be held every day at 3 p.m. People will be able to drop in, help themselves to some coffee and cake and be part of the discussion. Throughout the day, passers-by can catch live streams of the CEBIT d!talk conferences as shown on big screens at Kröpke Square.

Downtown dancing and partying to the beat of CEBIT

Thursday night is CEBIT Club Night, when Hannover will come alive with pusating dance beats. The event is being staged at the stunning historic Cumberlandsche Galerie venue by Der Rote Salon in collaboration with Hannover Unesco City of Music, and will provide living proof that digital technology is also very much a mainstay of the modern dance scene.

Last but definitely not least, the all-new CEBIT will end in style on Friday, 15 June, with a star-studded downtown concert starting at 6 p.m. on Kröpke Square. British pop and soul singer Emma Lanford will get the beat started, followed by the band MUNIQUE and British singer-songwriter Tom Gregory. At 9 p.m. the stage will be taken by a surprise act whose identity will only be revealed shortly beforehand.

This year's Hannover inner-city event program is the fruit of close collaboration between Deutsche Messe and Hannover's City-Gemeinschaft business association. “We are delighted at the association's enthusiastic and extensive role in making this ambitious program come to life. The parallel staging of CEBIT at the exhibition center and the various activities in downtown Hannover will no doubt bring back some of that Expo 2000 spirit we all so fondly remember,” commented Frese.

Please Note: The d!lounge on Hannover's Kröpcke Square will be officially opened – with photo ops – on 10 June at 1:30 p.m.
