As reported by the 'Wirtschaftswoche magazine' , several companies including Daimler, Volkswagen, Siemens, BASF, Bosch, Sennheiser, Hirschmann and ABB want to run their manufacturing operations on their own 5G networks and, with this in mind, are applying for local or regional licenses from the Federal Network Agency. The publication refers to a letter from the Central Association for the Electrical Engineering and Electronics Industry (ZVEI) , in which the companies explain that the nationwide suppliers do not provide sufficient cover in these areas. In order to ensure a 5G connection, they want to operate the networks themselves. Against this backdrop, the ZVEI expressly welcomed the possibility of allocating local and regional 5G licenses, since the new technology could also be used to "implement extremely sophisticated industrial applications".

For the major mobile operators such as Deutsche Telekom or Vodafone, these local networks represent new, unwelcome competition.
