Editorial staff at "Für-Grü" counted a total of 176 startup competitions in Germany during 2017, at which 752 newly established companies received awards. The number of awards, prize ceremonies, prize value, contest types and competition sizes were factored into the ranking. From this emerged a study showcasing the top 50.

Munich-based inveox GmbH took first place. The company is working on process automation when testing tissue samples in laboratories, concentrating on the receipt of samples. Digitization is intended to rule out mistakes such as attributing cancerous tissue to a healthy patient and healthy tissue to a sick patient.

Inveox is one of 13 companies with headquarters in Bavaria. This makes the state the most dominant presence in the top 50, followed by Berlin and North Rhine-Westphalia with seven companies each, and Hamburg with five. 86% of startups in the top 50 are focused on the B2B sector. 60% are active overseas as well as in Germany, with 18% operating in more than three countries. Together, the top 50 employ around 500 members of staff.

For this year, "Für-Grü" is providing a guide to the 170 founder competitions that are on the horizon or already underway.
