M2M connections to increase significantly

Market researchers at UK-based Juniper Research forecast strong growth for M2M mobile communications connections over the next five years. Prerequisite: the forthcoming 5G mobile communications network.

In a new study titled "M2M: Key Verticals, Technology Analysis & Forecasts 2018-2022," Juniper Research estimates that around 1.3 billion machine-to-machine connections will be running on mobile communications networks in 2022. This corresponds with growth of 220% compared with the around 400 million M2M connections in 2017.

Coming in at 66%, the strongest growth is expected for smart cities, followed by agriculture (37%) and intelligent measurement systems, such as smart meters (34%). Above all, cities will benefit from the development of LPWA networks (low power wide area) , which promise low costs and battery life of up to ten years. Over 25% of connections of smart city devices and applications will run on these networks in 2022.

Upcoming 5G mobile communications technology will play a key role, as it will be required to transport the estimated 160 petabytes of data that will be created in cities each year by 2022. According to the authors of the study, processing this volume will require modifications to the mobile communications network architecture. In comparison: Communication between more or less autonomous vehicles will reach around 7000 petabytes in 2022.
