Open Source has certainly developed into the digital world's heartbeat over the last years

Free, open source software, with the Linux operating system as one of its significant manifestations, has got increasing deployment on computers and technical devices across the globe. Whether it be a mobile phone operating system such as Google's Android, or the "embedded Linux" that serves as the core to e-book readers, TVs or in the automotive industry, free software has become indispensable in the digital age.

Of course, open source has also made its appearance felt on desktops, servers and netbooks as well. This includes enterprise management servers, and the backbone of Web and mail servers and databases. The applications are near to unlimited. Almost all enterprises and organizations employ open source technologies as part of their IT infrastructure.

For the third year in a row, CeBIT will again in 2011 take up the mantle of open source software and present Free and Open Software as its own theme at the conference. CeBIT Open Source will meanwhile have its usual place in Hall 2 to present the newest and most interesting free software development projects in a bigger way then ever.
