On 6 May 2015, the European Commission presented its strategy for creating a Digital Single Market in the European Union by removing regulatory barriers and moving from 28 fragmented national markets to a single market. The strategy comprises some 16 individual initiatives for implementation by the end of 2016. Among much else, the initiatives will drive the development of EU-wide telecommunications networks and cross-border digital services and stimulate a new wave of innovative European startups. The European Commission's overarching objectives are to provide European citizens with the best possible digital services and to create the largest possible digital single market for European companies.
