Deutsche Telekom and Zeiss are cooperating in the development of so-called smart glasses . Similar to the now discontinued Google Glass project, a data and information box appears in the field vision of wearers of such augmented reality glasses. Zeiss has already developed an optical system that is designed to help such data glasses approximate the size and appearance of conventional eyeglasses. Deutsche Telekom wants to equip the smart glasses with the necessary technology.

Some of the necessary technology will be outsourced to the cloud in future rather than being part of the data glasses’ hardware in the temple stems. Zeiss and Telekom are already banking on future network technologies, including on 5G as the technical basis . Market readiness is not expected for some time yet however: besides optics and network connectivity, manufacturers still have to develop useful applications and a user interface that meets the wearable’s specifics.
