According to a new study by eco, the Association of the Internet Industry, data traffic sent via mobile devices is now approximately 1000 times higher than it was just a few years ago and, last year, a volume of more than 500 million GB was achieved.
Arthur D. Little, the management consulting firm, explains that this development is also expected to continue as a result of data-intensive applications. Audio and video streaming via services such as Spotify and Netflix, in particular, has lead to an explosion in mobile data traffic.
The providers benefit from this development - they have already generated more sales this year with mobile services than with stationary access points. And despite the immense pricing pressure, business still remains profitable, eco claims. Some 45 % of sales are generated by German companies such as Telekom, 1&1 or Freenet and 55 % go to foreign providers such as Vodafone or Telefónica.
