DB Cargo has now opted for an Industry 4.0 solution from GE Transportation to digitalize the value chain of its rail freight operations. During the initial phase there are plans to equip 250 of the total 2,869 locomotives with the technology. For GE it is a milestone, namely its first digitalization-related contract in Europe. This was preceded by a three-month pilot project that improved the availability of the DB Cargo fleet and made it possible to reduce the number of operational failures by 25%.

The asset performance management application Rail Connect from GE is an extension of its Predix platform, a cloud-based operating system for the Industrial Internet. As a result, the American company is creating competition ‒ especially for Siemens ‒ in the growing IoT market. The MindSphere industry cloud solution developed in Munich resembles the Predix product and is built with SAP Cloud Platform technology. SAP also currently offers its platform-as-a-service product free of charge to encourage app developers to use it for their own services and analyses.
