The sweeping digital Transformation of Life

In the 19th century it was weaving looms and steam engines that drove the industrial revolution – and brought about the transition from an agrarian to an industrial society. Today, more than 200 years later, we are experiencing another rapid transformation, and one which has already swept across the worlds of business and society at large.

We are experiencing a digital transformation in which IT is serving as a major driver of innovation.

Under the featured “d!conomy” theme, CeBIT 2015 is addressing the ubiquitous digitization that is ever more strongly shaping our workaday and personal lives: Big Data, cloud computing, mobile access and social and security issues are increasingly interrelated and having major impact on business and society. Most recently it is the Internet of Things and all-encompassing networking that are strongly driving the development of business models, manufacturing processes and products – in every economic sector.

The Digital Transformation - d!conomy is Keynote Theme for CeBIT 2015 nIn the 19th century, the weaving loom and the steam engine helped drive the Industrial Revolution and heralded the transition from an agricultural society to an industrial society. Today, more than 200 years later, we are once again witnessing a rapid transition that affects all facets of the economy and society. We are witnessing a digital transformation. We are witnessing how IT is becoming a driver of innovation.

d!conomy & the manufacturing industry

In industry, manufacturing facilities are becoming ever more versatile, meaning that they can flexibly and immediately respond to fluctuating market demand or individual customer requirements. Some manufacturing facilities can even respond autonomously to such changes thanks to IT-based programs: all participating components – from workpieces to machines and all the way to transport systems – are networked and capable of autonomously communicating with one another.

d!conomy & the automotive industry

Digital transformation is particularly evident in the automotive industry. Here, comprehensive networking enables everything from automatic alerts via the car's connection with a smartphone, to communication of parts in need of repair to the manufacturer, all the way to the self-driving car. IT-based technologies help us look for parking and calculate the most efficient routes today. Soon cars will communicate among themselves to help significantly improve traffic management.

d!conomy & retail

Amazon, Zalando, etc.: The retail sector has been completely transformed with the rise of eCommerce. Today's online retailers with their huge product selections and fast delivery only became possible with fully networked logistics, including automatic merchandise tracking (RFID) and software solutions, and further massive changes are to be expected to emerge over the next few years. Same-day delivery makes online shopping more attractive than ever, and allows for the delivery of fresh grocery items to private households. Digital object identification is another trend for the future: You take a photo and a software application identifies the product. All the relevant information is available within seconds, and the item can then also be immediately ordered.

d!conomy & logistics

Trucks are more and more frequently equipped with sensors that let customers consult current vehicle data at any time. They can thus know precisely which shipment, at which temperature and quality and with what shelf life will arrive when, in order to store it accordingly. The use of cloud services and other solutions also offers possibilities for extensive fleet management.

The digital Transformation is not a fad

According to a comprehensive study carried out by Altimeter Group, the digital transformation is neither a passing fad nor just a trendy label for describing rising investments in the social and mobile sectors. The digital transformation adds up to much more than that, and is changing companies from the inside out.
