First Creative Commons 4.0 draft open for public comment

Creative Commons has released the first draft of version 4.0 of its suite of licence and is asking for feedback. Two more drafts are scheduled before the final version is made available at the end of the year

The non-profit Creative Commons (CC) organisation has released the first draft of version 4.0 of its suite of Creative Commons licences and is asking for feedback from the community. Diane Peters, CC General Counsel, writes in a blog post that the draft focuses on three overarching design goals: consideration of the needs of users who cannot use the current version 3.0 of the CC licences because of conflicts with national laws; maximum interoperability with other "copyleft" licences; and longevity and ease of use.

The CC team has summarised important changes and possibly contentious aspects that still need to be discussed on a separate Draft1 page. According to the current roadmap, the comment period on Draft 1 will be open until late May; two more drafts will be published in June and September; and version 4.0 will be finalised around the end of the year. An internal discussion started at the Creative Commons Global Summit 2011 preceded the creation of the first draft.
