Open Source

Open Source has certainly developed into the digital World's Heartbeat over the last Years

Free, open source software, with the Linux operating system as one of its significant manifestations, has got increasing deployment on computers and technical devices across the globe. Whether it be a mobile phone operating system such as Google's Android, or the "embedded Linux" that serves as the core to e-book readers, TVs or in the automotive industry, free software has become indispensable in the digital age.

The media agree: 2013 will be the year in which the free and flexible operating system asserts itself globally. The range of applications is huge, and free software can point to innumerable, sensational success stories: from the cost-saving Raspberry Pi mini PC through embedded and ARM hardware, smartphones and tablets, desktops, right up to Enterprise Server installations. No area of IT can ignore the innovation that assures a mature operating system thanks to systematic sharing of knowledge.

The big players on the Internet have long realized this. And Google is taking the free software to the consumer: smartphones with the Android operating system now have about a 70 percent market share. Meanwhile, multimedia servers in homes, vehicle on-board information systems and much more all run on Google's mobile Linux. Canonical's Ubuntu Phone and Mozilla's Firefox OS already see the next, free standards-based smartphones in the starting blocks. Freedom of choice, security, low hardware requirements, and uncomplicated handling all make free products popular with customers and users.

Establishment of key IT infrastructures is no longer conceivable without Linux and Open Source

The . Some 15 years ago it was still the Apache web server that opened the way for Linux and Open Source into the datacenter, providing a stable web infrastructure. Today, it is Open Source-based solutions that help to establish confidence in the sensitive field of cloud computing. The open standards in free software are based on collaboration in the community, thus offering the ultimate in terms of privacy, security and stability.

What business owner would be happy to use a cloud solution that depended on a proprietary solution by a non-domestic company if, someday, they might want to move on with their data? But if you run your cloud on free components, you can spring the notorious vendor lock-in trap.

The entire spectrum of Linux and open source applications is on shown at the Open Source exhibition focus area, in Hall 6 at CeBIT 2013 from March 5 through 9. At the daily keynote forum at stand F02, visitors can experience the latest trends backed up with business case studies.
