CeBIT lab talk: How researchers view the future

CeBIT lab

CeBIT lab

"At CeBIT lab we can experience the fourth industrial revolution: the Internet of things," said Reinhard Karger of the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence in Saarbrücken. Networked objects that interact intelligently with their environment are one topic of the world's largest ICT research and innovation platform. The future of the Internet is also examined, as well as 3D, robotics, catastrophe management, assisted living, green ICT, open cloud technologies and many other topics. "For Fraunhofer, CeBIT is the most important trade fair event of the year," said Fraunhofer Institute trade fair coordinator Welf Zöller. "In 2011 we opened the door to the city of tomorrow with the Urban Living focus."

The CeBIT lab talk forum will be a central meeting place for visionaries, as in previous years, with more than 100 talks, live presentations, podium discussions and project demonstrations. The forum will host the "Small business meets research" event on 8 March, focusing on all the latest standards, products and solutions for small businesses.

CeBIT lab also has its own cooperation exchange with EEN Future Match. This platform is supported by the Enterprise Europe Network (EEN), the European Commission's network to support small and medium-sized companies. EEN Future Match helps CeBIT exhibitors and visitors initiate broad-based business or technology partnerships and research collaboration in the information and communication technologies field. The event is directed towards companies as well as universities and research institutes. In 2011, more than 260 participants from 35 countries used this opportunity to make new contacts. Registration for 2012 is open until 20 February at www.futurematch.cebit.de.

Small business meets scientific research

On one day of the show the conference forum CeBIT lab talk is the setting for the special event "Small business meets scientific research". Top of the agenda here are the latest standards, products and solutions for the SME business sector.

  1. Heinz Paul Bonn: Welcome to „Mittelstand trifft Forschung“ (SMEs meet researchers)

    §Welcome

The German economy lives by innovation. It is the basis of our development of new products and of our economic success. Germany has a long tradition of invention and scientific achievement. A large number of technological achieve-ments have their origin in Germany. The latest technologies, for example in Enterprise 2.0 solutions, in RFID or in the field of Green IT are being developed by SMEs.

Information Technology in Germany, in a scientific sense, in addition to the IT faculties in the universities also includes the numerous independent research centres such as the Fraunhofer Institutes. In this area Germany has internation-ally-recognised leading-edge research structures.

Research and innovation is an important factor for success, particularly in small and medium-sized enterprises. There is a long list of German SMEs which are world market leaders. Inventive talent, audacity and business sense frequently occur together in SMEs.

German science researches and develops a lot of exceptional findings. Unfortu-nately not all of them find their way into marketable products. There are many reasons for this. We have discovered that one of these is relatively mundane: frequently scientists and SMEs do not get together because their ways do not cross.

With the format „Mittelstand trifft Forschung“ we create a platform to enable them to communicate with each other. Scientific institutions present their marketable results here at the CeBIT in a more compact and understandable form. They meet decision-makers from SMEs of the ICT industry and so establish commu-nications with interested companies. For us, this is a win-win situation: SMEs receive suggestions for new products and improve their competitive capacity. For the researchers, the chances are increased that their scientific findings will be transformed into practical products for a wide range of applications.

This is a co-operative project of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, BITKOM and the Deutsche Messe AG. It has been developed in the context of Working Group 6 of the National IT Summit of the Federal Government with the aim of improving the transfer of technology to SMEs.in the ICT industry. „Mittel-stand trifft Forschung“ is now being held for the second time.

The programme is wide-ranging and highly interesting. I am sure that it will be a source of important ideas and stimuli for SMEs in the ICT industry. I wish you all an interesting experience in the lectures and good discussions.

EEN future match

The Brokerage Event

During CeBIT 2012 the Enterprise Europe Network will again organise the brokerage event EEN future match. EEN future match provides a platform for exhibitors and visitors at the fair to find partners in Europe for commercial or technologyoriented partnerships and research cooperation in the field of information and communication technologies.

Participants choose potential meeting partners from the online catalogue and request bilateral meetings, which take place at the future match stand. Participants will receive their individual schedules in due time before the fair.

Last year, more than 440 participants from 46 countries made new contacts at CeBIT in around 1,300 talks.
