Germany is radically transitioning its energy production system away for nuclear and fossil fuels and towards renewables. The country’s power grids therefore need to be able to intelligently manage fluctuating renewable energy in-feeds and flexibly manage demand in synch with supply. They need to become smart grids.
Many of the technologies required for smart grids already exist; others are still in development. The paramount objective is to ensure that the various grid components and systems can “talk” to each other. Building smart grids will thus require coordinated teamwork between the energy, IT and electrical engineering industries.
The development of smart grids presents a number of exciting opportunities for the German economy. For one thing, the country will ultimately become less reliant on increasingly expensive fossil fuels. For another, it will profit from worldwide exports of German-made smart grid technologies.
At the Smart Grid Summit 2012, high-caliber speakers will discuss the opportunities and challenges arising from Germany’s energy system transformation and the country’s transition to smart grids.
