CeBIT and ICT sector promote credibility and trust

End-of-show report for CeBIT 2012 (06 March to 10 March)

The international ICT industry and CeBIT as its flagship show have injected fresh impetus into the global market.

Participating exhibitors rated CeBIT 2012 as a highly successful show. Surveys revealed yet another rise in the number of business contacts initiated and leads generated, and exhibitors reported lively visitor traffic throughout. Once again this year, more than seven million business talks were held at CeBIT. Trade visitors came with highly specific agendas and quickly got down to the business of working out the details of their ICT investments. This further substantiates CeBIT's unparalleled effectiveness as a global platform for lead generation.

This success can also be attributed to enhancements and performance tweaks made over the past several years. "We have worked hard on establishing CeBIT as a strong magnet for top buyers and decision-makers from the user industries. The third 'House of CIOs' at this year's CeBIT is proof positive that we have now achieved that goal," commented Ernst Raue, the Deutsche Messe Managing Board member in charge of CeBIT. He also noted that a new user association, 'Voice', chose CeBIT for its international launch. This association's members are the CIOs of DAX-listed companies and many other major enterprises, who collectively represent an annual ICT purchasing volume of more than 50 billion euros.

"Managing Trust": the keynote theme at CeBIT 2012

CeBIT and the industry as a whole have comprehensively addressed the issues of credibility and trust currently facing the sector.

CeBIT has addressed the keynote theme of ‘Managing Trust’ at just the right time, successfully putting these issues firmly on the international agenda. CeBIT exhibitors effectively demonstrated that the industry was, matching words with deeds, successfully translating the debate into real products and solutions. 'Managing Trust' was the keynote theme across the board - at the event'’s Opening Ceremony as well as at the CeBIT Global Conferences, the event's more than 1,500 seminars and workshops, and at exhibitor stands themselves.

Germany'’s Consumer Affairs Minister Ilse Aigner launched a new Web portal addressing the issue of Internet safety for children and young people. The new portal also provides a competent source of advice and support for youthful victims of online bullying. Another highlight was the joint announcement by the BITKOM high-tech association and the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) of plans to forge a 'cyber-security alliance'.

More than 130 business and political delegations from around the world followed the CeBIT call to debate the key issues of trust and security in a digital world, among them EU commissioners Neelie Kroes and Viviane Reding.

Partner Country Brazil

Raue thanked Brazil as the CeBIT 2012 Partner Country. The presence of 130 Brazilian businesses and organizations at CeBIT created an impressive showcase for the country's industrial skills and achievements, he said. Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff opened CeBIT 2012 together with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and the opening ceremony was a stunning occasion for the more than 2 500 attending guests.

The ceremony also attracted a wide audience on the Internet, with more than 16,000 viewers. A highlight at the opening involved the live broadcast to outer space. According to Ernst Raue, "This was an opportunity for us as the organizers to demonstrate the credibility and trustworthiness of advanced communications technology. A broadcast to outer space for such an international event was completely unprecedented."

For CeBIT visitors and the citizens of Hannover, the theme of 'trust' was further expanded upon when a local mass-transit strike took place on Thursday, 8 March. Not only did fleets of specially commissioned shuttle busses and Deutsche Bahn trains provide service to the fairgrounds; the people of Hannover - in a huge display of hospitality - provided more than 10 000 CeBIT visitors with transportation to the show in response to the 'Red Dot' campaign initiated by Deutsche Messe. "A great many of our international visitors and exhibitors made it to CeBIT thanks to the generous spirit of local residents. Our sincere thanks go out to everyone who rose to the occasion, thus demonstrating just how gracious a host Hannover is for the global community," said Raue.

"Nevertheless, CeBIT was impacted by the strike. It is highly regrettable that our exhibitors and their clients lost thousands of opportunities to engage in mutually fruitful business dialog. The strike was held on our busiest day and cost us many potential visitors. Many were clearly put off by fears of traffic chaos," explained Raue.

The next CeBIT will be staged from 5 to 9 March 2013 in Hannover.
