How do you understand someone who's moving their lips, but isn't making a sound? The answer to this riddle can be found at CeBIT 2010, courtesy of researchers from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).

The technology behind the solution uses electromyography: Electrical activity produced by muscles as they contract during the act of speech is translated into language via several stations. The system could make it easier for people suffering from a damaged larynx to communicate or allow telephone calls to be made without the risk of bugging.
